I hired Shawn to build the third generation of our expressionengine.com website at www.bionicturtle.com. The specs for this iteration include state-of-the art membership, ecommerce integration (merchant plus paypal), multiple products, and, at least for us, advanced functionality (e.g., we are currently integrating secure paid member access to Google docs, so our members can access protected spreadsheets). In my opinion, building a modern content management system has evolved into something very different than the early days of publishing static pages. Nowadays, sites are complex engines that run platforms that, in turn, tap outsourced functionality.
When I found Shawn, I had almost given up trying to add merchant credit card to EE's simple commerce module: nobody had done it, nobody could tell me how to do it. I seriously had started to look at other CMS solutions. Not only has Shawn done it (it's up!), he saved us from an overly-complex solution and achieved it with straightforward logic. We have a scalable solution (just what we needed, and can scale). Shawn shared the logic with me at every juncture!
Add to this: it is very difficult to find a reliable developer who is talented on multiple fronts. In the last four years, we've cycled through many developers and three attempts to offshore at lower price points. (I now believe that $20/hour is more expensive, in the long run, than $80 or $100/hour. When you add up the time and total cost of an inferior developer, I strongly believe you will find that a good developer will save you money, even as the per hour rate is several multiples of the offshore rate. I have wasted so much money trying to save money this way. If you are serious, don't try to cut corners here: it will extract a pound of flesh.)
Against that context, Shawn is the absolute best developer I've ever worked with and we plan to never leave him, if he will have us. In brief, painful and tearful experiences have become pleasurable. Please trust me, what you first want in a developer is: communication. Then, I think, you want: follow-through and follow-up (i.e., project management). Then coding talent. Finally, a bonus is proactivity; i.e., will they help you anticipate issues and suggest ideas. Shawn is basically a "perfect 10" on each of these criteria.
I can't thank Shawn enough for his surreal dedication to customer service. I am always running multiple outsourcings and you just can't find his ownership attitude. I honestly feel like the site is his site, such does he care. I keep adding requests and Shawn keeps telling me, we can do it. Then he does it. Seeing this, my designer wrote about Shawn: "I just want to pipe in and say that I'm glad that David found you, Shawn. You are excellent and accommodating." And so he is. It is great to feel that, as long as we are working with Shawn, the site has unlimited technical potential.
